Wars Are Not Won by Evacuations (Winston Churchill)

This speech was delivered by Winston Churchill (who had just replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister) to the House of Commons on June 4th 1940. He delivered this speech just after the evacuation of Dunkirk, which had begun on May 26th, was completed. Indeed, the Belgians had surrendered to the Germans and the British were forced to organise their retreat with the French Army. We will first have a look at the contents of the speech before focusing on the rhetoric used by Churchill.
