London and immigration

London, with over 50 ethnic communities counting more than 10 000 people each, with 300 spoken languages, concentrating 40% of the immigration, stands for diversity and multiculturalism.
After 1850, Chinese immigrants started settling in Limehouse, as well as Irish immigrants in the Docklands. By 1880, about 40 000 Jews from Eastern Europe were living in London.
The population of London rose from 1 to 6 million at the beginning of the XXth century reaching 8,7 millions in 1939.
In the 1950’s London absorbed about 20 000 west Indians each year. The same became true for Asians in the early 1960’s.
But, despite immigration, the population of London fell after 1945, and is about 7,2 millions today.
For the purpose of this exposé I will focus on Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities.
