Voltaire is the most famous philosopher of the Age of Enlightnment. He is remembered as a crusader against tyranny and bigotry. He is famous for his political and social engagement at that time. For instance he cleared the name of the protestant Calas who had been wrongly convicted and executed. But he was also a great writer. In fact, he wrote in any genres of the time including metaphysics. He was a poet, a dramatist, a story teller, a satirist and a polemicist as well as a philosopher and a historian. He wrote a lot of works of fiction and even an epic. But the best and most famous work remains Candide. So, in that case, speaking about Voltaire is speaking about Candide.
