Letters from an American Farmer, chap. III (Sir John Hector de Crevecoeur)
Commentaire de document - Histoire - 3 pages - Format Microsoft Word
During the early days of European immigration, the American continent did not enjoy a good reputation. Indeed, European philosophers, writers and poets propagated a grim vision of America. The Abbey Raynal among others claimed that America was a degenerate country. But as America needed immigration to expand, soon people such as Jefferson or St John de Crevecoeur famously responded these attacks by articulating rationales.
Letters from an American farmer are a good case in point. Indeed, Crèvecoeur published these letters for promoting the benefits of the life of the American inhabitants who enjoyed a particular status. This text in an excerpt from Letter 3 and shows a very biased vision of America which may be qualified as being Utopian.
