Commemorative symbols
Exposé - Anglais - 4 pages - Format Microsoft Word
The remembrance of traumatic past events is a necessity for the pacifistic construction of a community. Society needs to exorcise the traumatic events, like the two world wars, to avoid their repetition, or even the good past events, to have a collective past. However, the ways of remembrance can be diversified, and raise some issues. The principal difficulty is the risk of confusion between history and memory. Indeed it could be very dangerous to impose a vision of history. The history has to be kept objective, while the memory has to be kept subjective. But some ways of collective remembrance can be organized, without kind of statement, just to permit community to commune, to meditate on a united way. Within this context, the elaboration of symbols has often a principal role. Symbols take part of the representation of a past event. So, It is interesting (taking example of the “poppy”), to analyse the birth of the symbol, its signification, and its role; and to analyse the issues that symbols raise.
