Irving Washington is particularly known for his tales that stem from the Dutch Folklore. Sleepy Hollow is not unlike Irving’s previous works as it develops a typically folktale imagery: the characters’ names connote a trait of their physical aspect; the first person is used to narrate the story… But what is different from ordinary ghost stories is the blending of humour and terror.
