Should Turkey access the EU ?

For many years, Turkey has expressed its wish to belong to the EU. Today, the question whether Turkey should or not join the EU is one of the main issues for the following European countries that will head the European Union (Such as France in July 2008). Public opinion as much as the intellectual community is deeply torn apart on this issue. According to many people, Turkey is ready to join the EU and, what is more, the geopolitical consequences of a European negative answer would be dreadful. For others, Turkey cannot join the EU neither can the EU afford to welcome a country as Turkey in the current European situation.
